{"id":246710,"date":"2026-04-07T15:28:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T15:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportsworldghana.com\/?p=246710"},"modified":"2026-04-07T15:28:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T15:28:00","slug":"fifa-clears-wrexham-goalkeeper-arthur-okonkwo-to-represent-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/learn.oshtree.org\/b-class\/2026\/04\/07\/fifa-clears-wrexham-goalkeeper-arthur-okonkwo-to-represent-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"FIFA clears Wrexham Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to represent Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London-born <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_Okonkwo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arthur Okonkwo<\/a> has officially switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria after receiving approval from FIFA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision was confirmed through FIFA\u2019s change of association platform, making the goalkeeper eligible to represent Nigeria at senior international level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 24-year-old was born in London to Nigerian parents and previously represented England across several youth levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He featured for England from the under-15 to under-18 categories before deciding to switch his international future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goalkeeper can now be selected by Nigeria as they continue to strengthen their options between the posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nigeria\u2019s current goalkeeping group includes Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okonkwo developed in Arsenal\u2019s youth academy before beginning his senior career with several loan spells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those temporary moves included time at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He joined Wrexham on loan in 2023 before the move was made permanent the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since arriving at the Welsh club, Okonkwo has established himself as the team\u2019s first-choice goalkeeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has made 119 appearances for Wrexham and played a role in the club securing two promotions during his time there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goalkeeper has continued to impress during the current campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okonkwo has made 42 appearances across all competitions this season and recorded ten clean sheets in 37 Championship matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That tally places him among the top goalkeepers in the division for shut-outs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If he receives a call-up, Okonkwo could join several Nigerian internationals who previously came through Arsenal\u2019s academy system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those include Alex Iwobi and Semi Ajayi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nigeria recently finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after losing to hosts Morocco in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London-born Arthur Okonkwo has officially switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria after receiving approval from FIFA.
